I am saddened by the passing of Quincy Jones, a legendary music composer, producer, and my friend. I used to tell him that I regarded him as my younger brother.

While many honor him as a “titan in the musical world,” I want to also celebrate his unwavering dedication to humanitarian and social causes. He was a great supporter during my time as Governor of Virginia.

We stood together during civic events, rallies, and fundraisers. Quincy was gracious in lending his name and talent in supporting Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and others in the fight for equality and justice for all people. He was an ever-present champion for many causes, including civil rights, education, and HIV/AIDS research. He produced the “We Are The World” recording which raised more than $60 million in humanitarian aid to address famine in Africa.

Though his music has now fallen silent, his award-winning compositions, unforgettable movie and television programs, and the legacy of his civic activism will resonate forever.
