The action by the Virginia Military Institute to dismiss its superintendent, Maj. Gen Cedric Wins raises significant questions, the first of those being WHY? What justification has been issued related to his performance? These have not been answered.
The next question is, has General Wins ever been given the opportunity to make a case for his contract renewal and performance to date? Former Governor Ralph Northam, a VMI alumnus, initiated a million-dollar investigation, finding that racism and sexism at VMI were historically prevalent and continuing. This was said to be an impetus in the hiring of General Wins, a black man with a record of distinction.
It is not coincidental that Governor Youngkin dispatched a functionary staffer under his supervision to go to VMI two years ago to proclaim that “DEI is dead.” This situation is not about DEI, it is about racism. It is commendable that Northam, who had participated in racial antics while a student, saw the error of his ways and initiated the investigation.
Having served in several political positions at state and local levels, I know that the people of Virginia do not tolerate racism at any level and they are entitled to answers from those who represent them … now.
Stay tuned.
