L. Douglas Wilder, 66th Governor of Virginia

It appears our efforts to remove the scales from the eyes of those who are responsible for the inequitable funding of Virginia’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities have struck a mark.

The announcement by the current administration of that need tacitly admits to this neglect. On Dec. 9, outgoing Governor Northam announced that $10 million per year for two years is to be allocated to both Virginia Union University and Hampton University in his proposed state budget. Norfolk State University and Virginia State University will receive $164 million and $113 million respectively.

While additional funding is always appreciated, structured and equitable allocation of taxpayers dollars is and will be our demand.

We must be eternally vigilant.
